SCOTTISH SMES ANNOUNCE COLLABORATION TO ASSIST IN ESTABLISHMENT OFSTRATIFIED MEDICINE SCOTLAND INNOVATION CENTRE

Today Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond announced the creation of a £20M Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre (SMS-IC), an initiative to grow Scotland’s reputation as a world leader in the conduct of “smart” clinical trials.
In the simplest terms, stratified medicine is about delivering “the right therapy, for the right patient, in the right dose, at the right time”. It is a medical model using clinical information and molecular profiling technologies to tailor therapeutic strategies and to determine the predisposition to disease at the population level. It enables the delivery of timely and stratified care pathways, monitoring, treatment and prevention.

£3.25m invested in LUX Assure, a corrosion management company for the oil and gas industry

Technology business LUX Assure has received £3.25m to transform the company from a technology development business to a service provider for the oil and gas industry. The investment comes from ConocoPhillips; Statoil Technology Invest AS; Archangel Informal Investment (Archangels); and the Scottish Investment Bank (SIB), a division of Scottish Enterprise.

Archangel led £8.5m of investment to Scottish companies in 2011

Angel investment syndicate Archangel Informal Investment says it led investment of more than s8.5 million in Scottish early-stage firms last year.
The Edinburgh-based syndicate said it directly invested s4.88 million across a wide range of Scottish businesses, with the remainder of the overall investment coming from partners.
Archangel said investment last year was in line with the previous year.
The group said it also benefited from continued support from the Scottish Investment Bank, which invested s1.9 million alongside the business angel syndicate last year.

A GROUNDBREAKING antibiotic treatment to tackle hospital superbugs is being developed by Scottish scientists. Researchers at Glasgow-based firm MGB Biopharma have created a form of treatment which they believe is far more effective at treating both MRSA and C Clostridium difficile (C Diff) than current drugs used to battle the infections, which are often picked up by patients while in hospital.

Youngest person in Europe fitted with bionic fingers

A 15 year old from Swindon has become the youngest person in Europe to be fitted with bionic fingers. Chloe Holmes lost all her fingers to septicaemia as a toddler, and has never been able to pick things up for herself. but since fitting her left had with a full set of bionice digits - controlled by electronic signals from nerve endings - she has begun learning basic tasks such as brushing her teeth and using a knife and fork for the first time. Chloe's parents, Sue and Pete, said the £38,000 device - made by Scottish company Touch Bionics - had "completely changed her life".

Anti spam firm Bloxx named fastest growing in Scotland

The Livingston-based web and email filtering company, Bloxx, has been named as the fastest growing in Scotland. The accountants Deloitte has placed Bloxx at 19th in a list of the top 50 fastest growing UK companies.
The company has grown by 1,262% over the past five years and now has a customer base of 2.5 million users.
